Oats has never been my thing. I swear ~ having a bowl of oats porridge for my morning breakfast puts me off completely. But the huss insists on having oats (in any form) atleast once a week. Sometimes I flavor the oatmeal with some dates puree or banana mash and many a times the flavored Quaker Instant oatmeal comes as a life saver. So when the huss grabbed a 1 kg packet of Quaker oats, I was so very hesitant to take it in and give it a place in my pantry.
Now that it is in, I have started browsing for easy oats recipes and have bookmarked quite a lot. Now this isn't a bookmarked one but I referred my own kozhukattai recipes. There may be other versions out there but this is how I make it. It makes a great changeover for the regular oatmeal porridge that you have and tastes good on its own but I prefer to pair it with my steaming glass of mildly flavored karuppati kaapi.
How I Made it:
Add water to the jaggery and heat till it melts. Strain to remove impurities. Return to the pan and heat till it boils. Add the shredded coconut and cook for 1 min.
Next add the oats, cardamom powder and salt and cook till it absorbs all the water and forms a thick mass. Cool to room temperature, pinch lemom sized balls out of it squeeze to get your fingerprints all over the dumpling. Steam cook for 10-15 mins until non-sticky.
Serve with some flavored black coffee or karuppatti kaapi.
So thats it Folks...
